What are your beliefs?
We are members and affiliates with the Southern Baptist Convention. For more information on what we believe click here.
How big is the church?
Our church, founded in 1799, has grown into a healthy and vibrant congregation. We currently have more than 800 members and regular attendees. Sunday School averages 150 in attendance with worship averaging 250+ in attendance. We have 100 people actively involved in our Discipleship Ministry on Wednesdays and Sundays.
What time is your Sunday worship service?
We currently have one worship service on Sundays at 10:45a.
What do you offer for children on Sunday morning?
Kids are a special part of our congregation and we value them as full participants in the life of our church. Sunday School classes for kids (preschool through the 12th grade) begin at 9:30a. Immediately following the Sunday School hour, your kids will be transitioned into Kids Worship downstairs in the Life Building. During this time, they will engage in fun and exciting worship with some amazing adult servants while mom and dad can experience worship upstairs. They will learn Bible stories and life applications on their level through song, dance, the Word, crafts, games and more!
What do you offer for babies and toddlers?
Nursery care is provided for both infants and toddlers (to age 3) from 9:30 a.m. until the conclusion of the 10:45 service each week. The nurseries are located in the upstairs preschool area of the Life Building (adjacent to the Worship Center). Our infant nursery has several cribs and infant toys and is staffed by a trained and highly skilled caregiver. Our toddler nursery, located in the next room, offers a spacious play area with many fun, interactive toys for the children. Care is provided by an experienced childcare worker, and each week the toddlers participate in a brief Bible story time.
Who goes to your church?
We have quite a mixture of people on The Hill. Our congregation spans the ages, from newborns to folks in their 80s. You’ll find just about every type of person here – married, single, divorced, widowed – professionals, workers, retired – life-long Lexington residents and those who have just recently moved to the Athens-Oconee Area. But even more important than the kind of people who go here is the kind of people who are welcome here – everyone!
Do you have to dress up to attend your worship service?
No! Dressing up is not a requirement to worship with us on at Mars Hill. Some do wear their “Sunday best” but you’re also likely to see someone in slacks and a casual shirt, or even jeans. We believe the most important part about Sunday morning is showing up ready to worship God.
What kind of things do you do in your worship service?
We strive to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We greet each other so everyone feels welcomed; we share announcements and church news; we sing and listen to our choir worship through beautiful music; we share the congregation’s joys and concerns and lift them to God in prayer; we read the Bible and talk about it through the sermon; we collect an offering to further God’s work; and we take communion quarterly.

What kind of adult education/spiritual growth opportunities do you offer?
Adults have their choice of about a dozen different Sunday School classes to join each week at 9:30a. The classes vary in size, format and the age of their members but all are glad to have guests join them. Mars Hill also offers a variety of opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship outside of Sunday morning through groups like Women’s Ministry, Men’s Fellowship, Wednesday evening fellowship dinners, and other various Bible studies. Visit the Discipleship Ministry to learn more.
What kind of outreach is the church involved in?
Mars Hill is involved in several outreach ministries both locally and across the globe. We support the Cooperative Program, IMB missionaries, and several local organizations who serve to share the Gospel.
